A more rugged yet beautiful coast
The coastline on the southern side of the Mornington Peninsula is pounded by the strong currents and severe weather systems. The entire length of the Bass Strait coastline is formed from calciferous sand dunes and forms part of the Mornington Peninsula National Park.
A walking track known as the Coastal Walk connects Cape Schanck in the east to Portsea Back Beach in the west. Along the way, the landscape offers invaluable nesting sites for the endangered (and protected) Hooded Plover, and is home to an extensive range of other birds and animals. This notorious stretch of water has been the doom of many ships, with hundreds of wrecks littering this section of coast. While the seas can be rough and the rips dangerous, the scenery is simply spectacular.
