With its stunning foreshores, year-round schedule of popular events and abundant shopping and dining presence, Mornington stands as an enticing and lively town for the region. Moving from the famous racecourse to the bustling Main Street, there are experiences suited to each and every visitor. Here is our guide to some of the best things to do in Mornington on the Mornington Peninsula.
Markets
On the second Sunday of every month, the Mornington Racecourse Market continues its rich 27-year history with handmade, homemade and hand-grown goods aplenty. This includes everything from fresh local produce to colourful arts and crafts. Operating every Wednesday, the Main Street Market stands as the state’s longest running weekly street market. Finally, it’s all about delicious local and inspired flavours at Mornington’s Soul Night Market, Food Yard Sunday Foodies Market and Food Yard Night Market.
Beaches
It goes without saying the Mornington beaches are some of the best throughout the region. With its photogenic beach boxes, Mills Beach is a superb place to have a splash in shallow bay waters. Maybe even a stand-up paddleboard too! Shire Hall Beach is also dotted with vibrant beach boxes, and once again makes for a great place to go swimming with the whole family. Tucked away from other popular Mornington beaches, Royal Beach is a year-round off-leash dog beach. And somewhere all furry friends will no doubt love to have a run!
Food and Drink
If it’s a flavoursome adventure you’re wanting to follow, Mornington has a notable food and drink scene to suit. Along the town’s Main Street, expect to indulge in hearty menus (Squires Loft are the steak specialists!) as well as a range of tasty treats (YOMG is well worth a visit!) In addition to the main thoroughfare, there are additional places to check out within Mornington's industrial estate. Tar Barrel Brewery & Distillery makes for a great place to kick back, relax and soak up the sunshine with a crafted refreshment in hand.
Arts and Entertainment
The Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is the largest public gallery in Melbourne’s southeast region. As well as hosting an evolving schedule of exhibitions throughout the year, the gallery’s permanent collection incorporates over 1,800 artworks, many with a rich and compelling history. As a leading destination for thoroughbred racing and major events, the Mornington Racecourse represents an exciting setting for experiencing some of the best live entertainment on the Mornington Peninsula. Mornington Cup Day and Peninsula Cup Day are just some of the popular events held here annually.
Gardens
The garden spaces of Mornington are beautiful throughout all seasons of the year. Neighboured by the 19th century heritage house, Beleura Garden flourishes with fresh blooms and historical intrigue. The Mornington Botanical Rose Gardens showcase over 4,000 roses, accompanied by open lawn spaces and native Australian flora.
